Understanding what will happen or what could happen in this job of law enforcement is two completely different things. I might have an idea what your day consists of but in the end it could be so different that its scary. Given this opportunity to shadow a game warden is very cool and exciting all at once. But knowing that things can happen in a flash is very nerve racking. You always have to be on your toes in this field of work and trust yourself when you feel like something does seem right or someone doesn't act right. Its a job that never has the same day to day activities.
As it gets closer to this coming weekend, I get more and more excited because this past week I had received a text message from my mentor say that I could be past of some law enforcement stuff because I'm not a minor. So that got me supper excited and then he asked what I had going on this weekend because he wants to go out and check on some ice fishermen and some different lines and check if everyone has the correct permits and as well as fishing lines and also the correct amount of fish for their limit. So come this weekend and I'll be off doing what I truly dream of.
As I continue to talk to my mentor and figure out dates, I have a feeling that its going to be hard this month of February because he goes to Deadwood and trains and has meetings as well but we have come up with more dates and knowing that this time of year for him is very slow and a lot of office time makes things tough, but when I have the opportunity do ride or spend time with him, I will be taking and I will be spending as much time with him as I can. The last time I was with him was great and look forward to having more of those.
I had a great time with my mentor just the other day as we did our bird sex ratio. As we drove around, we saw everything from coyotes, white tail and mule deer and a ton of pheasants. It was great and I had a blast. We drove over 300 hundred miles and spent from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. and it was a great time.
So as time goes by, I get more and more excited about spending time with my mentor and look forward to spending time with him. We have discussed times and dates what we could possibly do and where to meet at. One of the things that we talked about and worked on was pheasant sex ratio. What that is, is have to go out and count how many roosters to hens we see and we can only drive so fast and have to be a mile away from pheasant farms. I am looking forward to this.
Wednesday the 10 I made a visit to my mentor that I'm going to shadow. He is a game warden from Chamberlain S.D. I'm very excited about having him as my mentor and I cant wait to get started with my senior project. I will be setting up times and dates to meet with him so I can get my required time. I am only able to do so much with my mentor because of the law enforcement part of his job, and he said that this time of year if more office time than any other time.
I am needing to get a lot of paper work done for my senior project, and I also need to contact my mentor before the 21 of Nov. and that is where I ask them if they would be willing to be my mentor and also, I will be setting up dates and times for us to meet one-on-one to sign paper work and just get to know each other. I am getting very excited and nervous at the same time. But I think this is going to be a blast.
Came to the end of my senior paper as I have finished it and handed it into my teach for her to grade, now I just sit and wait to see what I have earned on my paper. But things don't stop there. For my project I will be shadowing a Game Warden and I am very excited. I've always wanted to become a Game Warden my whole life and this gives me the opportunity to see what they really do, in person.
So recently we have started our ruff draft for our senior papers and its going very well. I never really realized how many note cards we were going to need until we needed to have all of them done and I looked back at them to find out how I'm going to write this paper, and there is a lot of information that I have put down on these cards. I'm really look forward to this finished project just to see how much it has come together.
